Holistic Nutrition

What is Holistic Nutrition?

Holistic Nutrition bases itself around the principle of allowing food to be one's medicine. This is achieved through a diet rich in natural whole foods, supplementation and positive lifestyle changes. It focuses on each person as a unique being and as a whole and takes into account their emotional, social, mental and spiritual health. Conventional medicine often addresses one’s symptoms where a Registered Nutritional Consulting Practitioner (RNCP) will understand the symptoms to address the root cause of the health issue.

An RNCP uses food as a means for preventing disease and ensures the body is receiving proper nutrients to optimally perform and remove toxins from the body. An RNCP will assist in sorting through and understanding the often conflicting information on topics such as herbal remedies, best food sources, supplements, detoxes, cleanses and environmental toxins that may leave individuals confused.

Who should use a Holistic Nutritionist?

Most everyone can benefit from seeking the advice of an RNCP. For example, individuals seek a nutritionist to:

  • enhance their health
  • seek advice on a disease or illness that has already been diagnosed
  • lose weight
  • prevent future illness

Just a few of the health problems a Holistic Nutritionist can help with are:

  • Arthritis
  • Allergies
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Pain
  • Diabetes
  • Digestive Difficulties such as IBS and constipation
  • Digesting Illnesses (including, but not limited to Celiac, Crohn’s Disease and Colitis)
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Hypertension
  • Prenatal and Postnatal Care
  • Skin Conditions

What is the differences between a Holistic Nutritionist and a Dietitian?

A dietitian is a regulated title in Canada that is earned through a bachelors degree. Typically, dietitians work in a clinical setting like a hospital or other health care facility. They recommend diets based on Canada's Food Guide, calories and diseases (like diabetes).

A holistic nutritionist focuses on whole foods that are best suited for that specific individual and takes into account their health concerns and goals. The goal is to bring balance back to the body to prevent illness and to live the best one can! Holistic Nutrition does not endorse processed or prepackaged food because the nutritional value decreases and preservatives and additives are introduced. Holistic nutrition also encourages local, organic foods which provide additional nutrition and is better for the environment. It also emphasizes the importance of soil health and reducing the chemical toxins and pesticides in our food and our earth.
